Titian, who early in his career had created woodblock prints himself, later relied on the wood-engraver Nicolò Boldrini (active in Venice, ca. 1530–1570) and others to circulate his inventions. This famous woodcut, the result of a direct cooperation between painter and printmaker, is based on Titian’s altarpiece The Madonna and Child in Glory with Angels and Saints (1533–1535), now in the Vatican Museum. The print treats its source rather freely by focusing on the lower half of the composition that in the original is dominated by Mary and the Christ child hovering on clouds above the saints. The head of St. Sebastian, the leftmost figure in this print was improved to heighten the emotional drama and compositional coherence.
