139 PIUS VI Braschi, Pope 1774-99

Obv. Bust to right, wearing skullcap, mozzetta and stole, blessing. Around, PIVS * SEXTVS * PONTIFEX * MAXIMVS *
Rev. Christ carrying the cross. Around, FACTVS * EST . PRINCIPATVS . SVPER . HVMERVM . EIVS .
Bronze, struck, 50 mm.

The inscription on the reverse alludes to the burdens borne by Pius during his pontificate. The medal may predate his final and losing struggle with France (1798) but it may also have been issued shortly after the restoration of the papacy in 1814 by his successor, Pius VII. Not listed among the medals of Gioacchino Hamerani, medalist to Pius VI. Thus it may postdate his reign.
