The lithe figure of a nude male stands in a dancer’s pose, left foot extended, heel lifted. He unrolls a scroll, yet turns his head away from it, setting up a dynamic tension in his upper body. The figure displays Parmigianino’s skill in crafting typical Mannerist proportions: long legs and arms and an extended torso. Separate detailed studies of the left ankle and foot and of the right leg fill the right side of the drawing. This study relates to the standing saint in Parmigianino’s most famous painting, The Madonna with the Long Neck, begun in 1534. Since the pose of the figure varies slightly from the final painted version, this drawing is not a copy after the finished work. Further research could determine whether the drawing comes from the master’s own hand, made in preparation for the painted masterpiece.
