Ugo da Carpi was one of the first practitioners of the chiaroscuro woodcut working first in Venice, and then, after 1517, in Raphael’s circle in Rome, and after 1527 in Bologna. His woodcuts are usually printed from three to five blocks, reproducing in a close tonal range the painterly effects of Raphael’s and his followers’ compositions. Ugo, who signed his blocks, received copyright for his prints from authorities both in Venice and Rome.
