Most likely Italian, this view along with "A Painter’s Studio" [1813.46] of imaginary studio spaces reflect on artistic ambitions as well as practice. Perhaps not coincidentally, apprentices are pictured in both paintings. A young man in the sculptor’s studio seems caught by surprise as his master approaches with a client. He looks up from his work in a moment of confusion. A young draftsman is at work in the painter’s studio as well. Seated in the back, he peers out at a noble lady and her daughter who are posing for a portrait. Might the execution of these works, which reveal a rather modest skill level of the painter, have been part of a young artist’s education?
