Antonio Di Puccio Pisano (Pisanello)

(1395 - 1455)

Antonio di Puccio Pisano, considered the founder of the modern medal, was born in Pisa and trained in Verona. He worked in most of the major courts of Italy and had become famous as a painter of frescoes, portraits and animals by the time he cast his first medal, that of John Palaeologus, in 1438.
