During a trip to Holland in 1847, Constant Troyon, a member of the French Barbizon School of naturalist landscape painting, discovered and became inspired by seventeenth-century Dutch animal portraits. Troyon was known thereafter as an animal painter and found acclaim for these works. In canvases such as Goat and Sheep, he created harmonious depictions of animals in their natural habitat, a subject that appealed to many European and American collectors.
