Dear Laura,
Would you please adjust the EmbArk record 1974.112.1 and .2 to reflect the fact that these paintings are modern replica? We need to de-accession them to avoid further confusion. Let’s keep them in mind as we are discussing future de-accessioning projects.
The object file lists them as
“Fra Angelico (copies after, modern)”
Or would it be more appropriate to inventory them as “Unknown Maker,” title: “Copy after Fra Angelico’s Musician Angel”?
According to the acceptance letter from Peter Mooz, then director, from August 19, 1975, these works were to be placed in the “Study Collection.” When he requested an appraisal from the Art Dealers Association of America he received the following response, on July 25, 1975: “We feel that these are not works of art in any sense of the word and, frankly, we are surprised that they are being accepted by your museum. These seem to us to be the type of thing that are made for the “tourist trade” and we would find difficulty in assigning any value to them.”
Thanks,
Joachim
