Object Description

406 SATYR AND PUTTI MILKING A GOAT
A satyr and two putti hold a goat in a forest setting, while a third putto milks it and another stands by. On the left a putto beating a drum, another blows a curved "lituus" or ram's horn.

Bronze, dark patina, aftercast, 68 x 94 mm.

In composition and representation this relief is just like an ivory relief in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Inv. no. 1061), which is dependent on a drawing by Francois du Quesnoy, "Six Infants Playing with a Goat," in Vienna, the Albertina (Inv. no. 8446; see M. Fransolet, Francois du Quesnoy sculpteur d'Urbain VIII, 1597-1643, Brussels 1942, pl. 4, f.).
Another specimen: Santa Barbara, University Art Gallery, Morgenroth Collection.

Bibl.: Morgenroth, no. 427; Weber, no. 1016. Auction catalogs: Molthein, no. 556 (as French, middle of the sixteenth century); Cahn, Frankfurt/M., Catalog 59, 14 March 1928, no. 2269, pl. 34.
