Object Description
406 SATYR AND PUTTI MILKING A GOAT
A satyr and two putti hold a goat in a forest setting, while a third putto milks it and another stands by. On the left a putto beating a drum, another blows a curved "lituus" or ram's horn.
Bronze, dark patina, aftercast, 68 x 94 mm.
In composition and representation this relief is just like an ivory relief in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Inv. no. 1061), which is dependent on a drawing by Francois du Quesnoy, "Six Infants Playing with a Goat," in Vienna, the Albertina (Inv. no. 8446; see M. Fransolet, Francois du Quesnoy sculpteur d'Urbain VIII, 1597-1643, Brussels 1942, pl. 4, f.).
