This self-portrait medal of sculptor Francesco da Sangallo depicts his wife Elena Marsuppini on the reverse. Few medals have ever come close to the size and depth of this example because of the technical difficulty of casting in such high relief. According to art historian Gustav Clausse, Sangallo likely made this medal to express his deep affection for his wife, amusingly quipping that it carried “the weight and gravity of a marriage contract.” Perhaps indicative of their close bond, the couple died within months of each other.
